Bull Knives Surprise Reveals Production Mini Xyro

0 6

Gareth and Jason Bull of South Africa’s Bull Knives had some exciting news to share this week: they are planning on releasing a production version of their Mini Xyro custom. Although release details are still TBD, the Bulls shared all the important specs to whet buyers’ appetites.

This production Mini Xyro aims for that particular sector of the production knife sector that, while not handmade, remains faithful to its custom progenitors with premium materials and luxurious finishing. To that end they tapped Reate Knives as OEM on this one, a company known for its high-end, small batch production pieces rendered with painstaking processes.

The clip is sculpted titanium (non-reversible)

The Mini Xyro’s blade is 3 inches on the nose, and, like many Bull knives, it opens primarily with a front flipper – a deployment format that the Bulls have favored for many years now, and certainly helped popularize in custom and production circles with their Shamwari model. The Xyro’s blade is just the right length for everyday carry, and the steel excels in that role too: it’s M390, a reliable super steel that earns high marks in edge retention and stain resistance in particular. In a nice touch indicative of Reate’s atttention to detail, the flats inside the secondary deployment grooves cut into the blade are bead blasted, both to contrast with the satin blade flat and primary grinds, as well as provide a little more traction for one’s fingers while opening with a thumb roll or Spydie flick.

Speaking of the Shamwari, the Xyro’s handle shape does not differ too greatly from the simplicity of its illustrious predecessor’s; there are a few harder lines here, but nothing so dramatic as to interfere with the fundamentally neutral profile. The frame is made from titanium, with letterboxed scales made from black camo carbon fiber. This is a light knife thanks to all the titanium and carbon fiber, weighing just 2.5 oz. even with that larger blade.

No availability or release window yet. According to Bull Knives, whenever they’re ready they’ll be doing the ordering process through their website.
